To mark World Menopause Day (18th of October), we've asked Justine Masters (find her here) for her top tips for menopausal skincare and makeup. Justine is a holistic facialist specialising in embracing the natural beauty of all skin. She believes in long term skincare, not quick fix treatments, and she is an expert in menopausal skin. 

About your skin

From the age of 25, you start to lose collagen and the fat pads around your eyes and face begin to deplete. This can be exasperated by sugar consumption, particularly refined sugar, as it clings to collagen and breaks it down. It's important to adapt your skincare to suit your skin as these changes occur.

Your skin during the menopause

The types of skin concerns we see in menopause include hormonal acne, rosacea, enlarged pores, extremely dry skin, reddening and ruddiness, broken capillaries, hyperpigmentation and melasma. 

Depleting oestrogen levels also contribute to the feeling of having 'aged overnight'. Oestrogen is like a 'youth serum' for skin, and as it decreases, collagen production plummet and skin thins, becoming less elastic.

How does this impact makeup?

Depending on what skin complaints you are suffering with depends on how your makeup is affected.

Extremely dry and dehydrated skin has more fine lines, which makeup settles into. Makeup can also irritate extremely dry skin.

Using the wrong products with acne can irritate and inflame it further, especially comedogenic products.

Covering pigmentation such as rosacea can also be tough. The skin can become irritated by the ingredients in many products.

2. Use liquid blusher. It blends better for a more natural finish. You could also use the natural flush of your skin.

3. Revamp your makeup collection! Don't stick to your old collection, go to a counter and let the experts help. Explain your skin complaint and they can recommend non-comedogenic, non-irritative products for you to try. You can even ask for samples to try before you buy

4. You are what you eat, so stress, diet and mindfulness working alongside the right skincare can make all the difference.
